Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
