Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
