Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the unrest.
