The Ashes series Individual Performance Scores: Which England Cricketers Received a 1/10 Rating?
'Top class' Head Hundred Has the Aussies Cruising Towards Victory Over the English
English Team Individual Evaluations
Zak Crawley – One
Expected in Aussie pitches however recorded just a rare duck in both innings from an England top-order batsman facing only 11 balls.
Ben Duckett – Five
Made starts in both innings. The way he got out during the match marked the point when it began to unravel for England.
Ollie Pope – 6
Appears better due to technical tweaks. The first Test of a series is usually his strongest, after which his form dips. The team require him to kick on.
Joe Root – 1
Far off that first hundred in Australia. The side require the nous from their star performer to have any chance to come back from this defeat.
Brook – 5
His half-century in the first innings was lively, but valuable. Awful shot in the second innings.
Ben Stokes – 6
Returned after being injured with a five-for, though looked out of touch with the bat. Struggled while fielding in the face of Head's aggressive batting.
Smith – 4
Could have the skills for Australia, yet must to improve. Will likely face a lot of bouncers from now on.
Atkinson – Five
Part of the impressive English initial bowling performance and tried to carry the fight with the bat in the second innings. Part of the attack that collapsed on Saturday evening.
Brydon Carse – 5
Comparable to the previous, plus the mustard of being taken apart by Travis Head.
Jofra Archer – Five
Looked impressive while bowling in the first innings and was the top of a bad bunch in the second. Might yet have an impact in the series.
Mark Wood – 5
Went without a wicket, but massively impressive to just take part given his absence.
Australian Team Player Ratings
Jake Weatherald – Six
Debutant had tough luck to be exposed to Jofra Archer in the first innings, then contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.
Khawaja – Three
A bizarre match. Appeared fit and had periods off the pitch. Held on to a couple of important catches in the slips, but also looked immobile in the field. Earns a point due to his injury that allowed Head to bat as opener.
Labuschagne – 7
A successful return to the side. Absorbed the English pressure better than most initially, and backed up Travis Head in the second.
Smith – Five
Looked out of sorts in the first innings. Unnecessary before the game comments about Panesar.
Travis Head – 9
Possibly unfair not to award a perfect score, but he attempted a rather ropey shot initially. His second-innings century proved to be an historic innings.
Cameron Green – 5
Took the key wicket of Ollie Pope in the first innings. Rattled by one Mark Wood bouncer during his innings. Barely needed in the second half.
Alex Carey – 5
Tried a counter-attack versus the English attack on the first evening. Neat behind the stumps.
Mitchell Starc – 9
Carried the burden of the attack in the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood achieving the first Aussie Ashes series 10-for for two decades.
Boland – Six
Below his best in the first innings. Improved in the second to trigger the England collapse.
Doggett – 6
Steady first appearance. Quite capable stand-in for Cummins and Hazlewood.
Lyon – 2
Virtually an onlooker in a match controlled by fast bowling. Maybe suffered an injury when struck by Mark Wood.
