The former Liverpool manager says rejoining to lead Liverpool is conceivable.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that returning someday remains an option. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful nine-year spell featuring a European Cup triumph and the Premier League crown since 1990, now holds roles as head of global soccer for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
They secured the Premier League under Arne Slot, yet numerous supporters who revere Klopp would welcome the idea that he might come back one day. Speaking candidly, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I stated I refuse to lead another team on English soil. So that means in case it's my former club...yeah. In theory, it could happen.”
“Being 58, which suggests I could make the decision in a few years, I don’t know. Must I choose now? Then I will not coach again. Luckily, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on the specific conditions would need to occur to bring him back to the dugout, he revealed he isn't eager for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he said. “No longing for management; I avoid standing under bad weather for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to press conferences repeatedly each week or doing numerous chats weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, but sitting in a restaurant with the team having a nice chat, is pleasant. We won a lot of games meaning regularly great spirits around the place. I can still hear Van Dijk's laughter in my ear as an instance.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended regarding Arne Slot, acknowledging his role for the tweaks which secured the championship in the previous season. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches across various tournaments after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the suggestion of it representing a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if you use the wrong words. A remarkable prospect. The French striker, superb talent. They have a strong well-judged squad. Fans shouldn't fret about Liverpool, things will improve.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Diogo Jota, whom he brought in in 2020, and the effect on Liverpool. Jota lost his life in a road accident with his brother in July.
“Who can fill the void of a person like him? It’s not about the player himself, it’s the guy he was. I can’t imagine the team environment without him in it. Putting it into words is tough on this topic. A devastating blow for the entire squad too. Not a single person will ever use it to justify results but it is the situation. You walk in a dressing room which he filled completely. Handling this emotionally is challenging. Overwhelming.”
