This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
