Two Cuba-bound Aid Vessels Declared Lost following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailboats carrying relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Naval Rescue Operations Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of nine total personnel, per a official statement.
The vessels had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.
Context of Relief to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Previous Relief Mission
Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.
That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, drugs, infant formula, bikes and provisions.
Larger Geopolitical Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.
International organizations have since warned of "dire" supply shortages, with over 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy tensions have been ramped up lately, with comments from different leaders emphasizing the delicate nature of relations.
Responding to certain statements, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its command to find the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
