Venus Williams, 45, Awarded Wild Card for First Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.
Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had earlier stated in November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my career."
Statistical Highlights
Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.
Establishing a Fresh Benchmark
Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.
Latest Personal Milestone
In late December, Williams wed Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
