When Swimmers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the famous shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed loud noises ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” she explains. She left her home, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the road, talking to a pair who had rushed up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He’s running towards something that certainly every instinct would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage During Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and medical teams caring for numerous victims.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the location of the incident serving as a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, including rushing into the surf to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the tragedy, statements of gratitude were shared. An online statement shared appreciation for the lifeguards who exhibited that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The squad of beach patrol issued a statement, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and support. We are deeply moved by the care for our responders,” the team stated. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the aim that it helps those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the crew rose to the occasion from the moment the shooting commenced right into late that night.

“There have been so many emotional narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our iconic shores secure for visitors, but what we observed on that day should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much light we have observed in the face of such hatred.”
